@botanicalsmh on North Railway is one of my favourite places in this city.

The sun comes through the front window in a way that makes me want to just stand there and absorb it. Every single time. Huck and Daisy greet you like you are the best thing that has happened all day. Karri has created something genuinely special here and you can feel it the moment you walk in. These are the places that make a city worth living in.

Plants, pots, crystals, candles, workshops. There is always something happening and it always feels good.

Lunahrin has a corner there. My one-of candles live at Botanicals, each one labeled with scent notes, each one limited to a handful at most. When they are gone they are gone and they do not come back. Happy Place is a custom scent Karri and I created together for the shop. You will only find it there.

The fall market at Botanicals is one of my favorite days of the year. The energy in that space when it is full of makers, music and people who love beautiful things is something else entirely. Watch for it.

How Long Should I Burn My Candle For?

Long enough to melt the top layer all the way across.

That’s the easiest way to get an even burn and avoid tunneling.

For most candles, that usually looks like 2–4 hours depending on the size of the jar and the room temperature.

A few real-life rules that help:
• Don’t burn it for 20 minutes and call it a day. That’s how you get a hole down the middle.
• Don’t burn it all day either. Give the jar a break. If you’re leaving the room for a while, blow it out. Simple.

Diffuser oils are for the people who want steady background atmosphere.

No flame. No spraying. Just a slow, consistent scent that keeps the house feeling taken care of while you’re doing literally anything else.

Wax melts release fragrance as they warm up, and over time that fragrance evaporates into the air. Eventually, what’s left is mostly just wax doing its job as a carrier, with very little scent left to throw.

A few things that can make melts feel like they fade faster:
Large open rooms
High ceilings
Lots of airflow (fans, vents, drafty spaces)
A warmer that runs very hot

If you’re not getting much scent anymore, it usually means it’s time to swap in a fresh cube.

And if you’re wondering how to change out the old wax:
Some warmers let you pop the dish into the freezer so the wax releases cleanly.
If you need to remove it while it’s warm, pour it carefully into a disposable bag to cool and solidify, then toss it. Not down the drain.
You can also use a small silicone liner cup in many warmers to keep things tidy.

I saw an idea recently that I can’t stop thinking about, because it’s the exact kind of gathering I actually want.

St. Brigid’s Day.

In Ireland, Brigid has long been tied to the return of light, the protection of the home, and the kind of steady care that keeps people going through late winter. The stories hold her as a saint, but the older roots run deeper, closer to the land and the household.

Traditional Brigid customs were simple. A bit of cleaning. A bit of fire. A bit of blessing. Not performance. Just folk habits. The kind that make a home feel steadier.

The Story Behind the Name Lunahrin

I’ve loved scent for as long as I can remember.

As a kid I used to squeeze shampoo bottles just to smell them, sometimes so hard I’d get it right up my nose. The old Canadian Tire smell from shopping with my dad still takes me back instantly. Scent is weird like that, in the best way.

I can still tie certain scents to people, too. Cinnamon and turnips makes me think of my nana (I know, it’s a strange one). Banana bread is my mom. That kind of thing never really leaves you.

During COVID a lot of things shifted for me, and I didn’t want to keep running my photography studio. I don’t even fully know why, but scent came back into my mind. I took an online course on perfume making, which led to candles, and then suddenly it made sense. I wanted to share that feeling of being taken somewhere, the way scent always did for me.

When it came time to name it, I knew I wanted “Luna” in there, for the moon. Night. Candlelight. Mystery. Storytelling in the dark. But one of my friend’s children is named Luna, so I didn’t want to just use that outright.

We started talking about the warmth and heat candles create, and we looked up words connected to fire in other languages. “Ahrin” came up, and Lunahrin clicked into place.

Funny enough, when I went to look it up again recently, I couldn’t even find the same reference. What I can find now is that Ahrin can mean “enlightened" or "bright."

And honestly, I’m just as happy with that.

Somewhere along the way, we lost that rhythm.

January often arrives with pressure to reset, overhaul, improve. But older seasonal thinking offers a gentler suggestion: rest is not a failure of effort, it’s part of the cycle that makes growth possible at all.

You don’t have to stop everything.
You don’t have to disappear.

But you might not need to fill every moment either.
